We all remember that old saying: “An apple a day keeps the Dr. away.”. The saying was created as a way to stress the importance of having fresh fruit as a means to support the immune system. In reality, you can get the Vitamins and antioxidants from other fruits, as well as vegetables. This is why fruit and veggie smoothies are so good for you. They taste delicious, fill you up and keep you healthy.

According to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines, about half of our daily diet should be fruit and vegetables. The other half should be a mix between grain and dairy. Sadly, recent studies show that 80% of kids are not getting the required fresh fruit and vegetables that their body requires. This is making for a generation of unhealthy and sick kids. 

What Vitamins are in Fruits and Veggies?

The vitamins provided by fruit and vegetables are vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin A. But other necessary and beneficial nutrients are also gained from eating them, including folate, magnesium, potassium, dietary fiber.

Here are some helpful tips for ways to get your child interested in eating fruits and veggies:

  1. Set a good example. Eat fresh fruit and veggies yourself and set the example.
  2. Have them on hand at all times. Make sure fresh food is there for snacks and meals.
  3. Involve your kids in the cooking and preparing process. This familiarizes them with the foods.
  4. Encourage them to try new foods.
