People love getting their smoothies from us. They pay some cash and then get to enjoy a healthy treat made by professionals. But many people want to make smoothies on their own too. When starting out on this new journey, they are often confused as to what kind of liquids to use when making their own smoothies. They are often curious as to what the best liquid base is.

In this blog we will list the most common and the most beneficial liquids to use while creating your own smoothies at home.

  1. Filtered or Purified Water – Water makes up most any drink or liquid for that matter. And you want the cleanest water possible. A nice filter should do the trick. Brita or Pur make great filters that you can use to purify your water.
  2. Fresh Juices – If you can squeeze or press your own juice right from the source, this would be ideal. Juice tastes best when it is fresh. That is a fact.
  3. Coconut Water – This liquid is rich in energy. It has potassium and carbohydrates. If you are on a sodium restricted diet you may want to rethink this ingredient however.
  4. Dairy Milk – Some recipes call for milk or a dairy product to be used. You can used 2% milk if you are making a healthy smoothie that is low in fat.
  5. Almond Milk – This milk is a healthy alternative to dairy milk for those who have trouble with lactose or are vegan.
  6. Soy Milk – This is another good alternative to dairy milk for those who are lactose sensitive or vegan. It contains plenty of protein as well as Vitamin A and B.
  7. Green Tea – Low in caffeine and tannins, green tea is a great additive for certain smoothies. It is fat-free, cholesterol free and has no calories.

Best Smoothie Ingredients to Make You Feel for Fuller for Longer Thu, 01 Oct 2020 19:34:15 +0000 Continue reading "Best Smoothie Ingredients to Make You Feel for Fuller for Longer"

smoothie meal replacementSmoothies are a delicious way to gobble down some nutrients in a quick and convenient manner.  They are usually considered to be more of a snack than a meal. But some smoothies, by what they contain, are considered “meal replacements’ in that they have sufficient nutrients to replace a meal and the ingredients will keep your hunger at bay until the next scheduled meal.

With all that in mind, here are the top five ingredients for a smoothie that will keep your satiated for longer:

  1. Vegetables  – Veggies are natures way of filling you up and loading you with natures nutrients. It is no accident that every entrée usually comes with vegetables. A balanced diet requires veggies to fill you up as well as keep you regular.
  2. Healthy Fats – People tend to automatically think of fat as being a bad thing. But your body operates optimally with a certain amount of fat intake. And not all fats come from meat sources. Plant based fats are good and good for you and they keep you from getting hungry.
  3. Protein – Supplements can be added to your smoothie to give you that protein boost, especially if you are supplementing meals.
  4. Fiber – Seeds, seeds and more seeds. Add flax seeds or chia seeds to your own smoothie to make it more filling. A great side effect is that they make you very regular as well.

It is advised that you stay away from using caffeine or like substances to stimulate your nervous system in order to curb your appetite. It has been proven that doses of caffeine large enough to suppress appetite can also cause heart issues. Your heart is the engine of your body. If you damage your heart, you damage your life.

You probably had hamburgers and hot dogs and perhaps some pasta salad or slaw. But not getting the nutrients provided by green foods even for a short duration like a holiday can be detrimental. This holds especially true if you partook in drinking alcohol.

This combination can create a lot of toxins for our body to filter out and consequently our immune system is weakened. The nutrients found in green foods are part of what supports your immune system. Along with Vitamin C from fruits, the vitamins and minerals found in kale, broccoli, lettuce, celery and other greens are essential for a healthy immune system and overall optimal living.

There is a shortcut, however. The green smoothie helps replace and replenish all those vitamins and minerals that you missed. You don’t have to wolf down a big green salad or make kale chips every day.

You can go to our menu and check out the section under Smoothies labeled Green Smoothies & Power Smoothies. Here you will find the smoothies you need to stay healthy. “The Green Room” is a healthy and popular green smoothie that features Pineapple, Banana, Mango, Spinach and Kale.

Best smoothies and fruit bowls in Outer BanksThe purpose of food, of course, is to supply our bodies with energy. The energy comes in the form of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. These molecules are delivered to us by the food we choose to eat daily. But we also need antioxidants (vitamins) as well as minerals. Without them, the body cannot run a healthy immune system.

Tourism in the OBX Soars Despite Pandemic Tue, 14 Jul 2020 19:50:29 +0000 Continue reading "Tourism in the OBX Soars Despite Pandemic"

The superintendent of National Parks in the region Dave Hallac recently said “If things stay on track, we are likely to have either a record visitation year or a year that is certainly up there in terms of high numbers of visits. It’s fairly amazing. Since Dare and Hyde Counties reopened in mid-May, we are having very high-levels of visitation.”

All of this despite the Corona virus pandemic and preceding lock-down. Theories that the pandemic lock-down immediately prior to the summer have created an intense longing for the beach and waves by many people are what are generally accepted. Also, the fact that people are trying to social-distance, they are doing so in wide open areas like state parks and the beach.

Hallac went on to say “We are asking for folks to wear masks, that’s strongly recommended, to wait six feet apart when they’re in line or at a visitor attraction and to wash their hands, and we are finding that the large majority of people are doing that.”

Hallac believes that people come to the unique underdeveloped shoreline of the Outer Banks in order to forget about the troubles of the modern world. “The beaches are open, the water is warm, and when it comes to enjoying Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the visit should be very similar.”

Island Smoothie Cafe is here for you. We are producing delicious smoothies and healthy meals for you to pick up on a daily basis. Please feel free to order online and pick up outside of our store.

Running on All Cylinders Fri, 03 Jul 2020 19:53:31 +0000 Continue reading "Running on All Cylinders"

It has been the most precarious year. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought real problems to the U.S and World economies. And that extends all the way here to our tiny sliver of land called the Outer Banks.

We were forced to open much later in the season than usual. We were also forced to close down our dining room as well as implement special full-time mask procedures.

Here we are, July 3rd and things are rolling along. Business has been good. People still want their delicious fresh smoothies and healthy food after or before a day at the beach. Life must go on.

We are especially grateful to our regulars who are our foundation. We thank you for trusting in us. A great number of new customers have found us this year as well. We hope that they like our products and that they spread the word.

We are still doing curb-side pick-up until we get the OK from the government to open the dining room again. The way things are looking, that may be later than sooner.

The fruit is fresh and the waves are crashing as they always were. Check us out online, put in your order and come by to pick it up. Thank you.

See What They’re Saying About Island Smoothie Tue, 14 Apr 2020 17:24:40 +0000 Continue reading "See What They’re Saying About Island Smoothie"

We have been proud to serve the Outer Banks community for several years now and look forward to doing so again very soon. Once the coronavirus dissipates and restrictions are lifted we will re-open shop.

We have spent this down-time putting all our ducks in a perfect row to be able to reopen and serve our public without a hitch. We have also taken this time to reflect on the past few years and some of the feedback we have received. It makes us very happy to know we are receiving all positive feedback from our clients.

Below we have put together a few of the reviews that people have left for Island Smoothie Cafe:

Jul Taylor wrote on Facebook wrote:  “everything was delicious! the owners were super nice. I really liked the freshness of everything from bread to granola and all the fruits and veggies in between. simply the yummy, reasonably priced, healthy option we love.”

Angela Stratakos on Facebook wrote: “Wonderful experience at Island Smoothie. Tasty smoothies, great Acai bowls and sandwiches. Pleasant customer service. We went there 3 days in a row!!! Thank you!!”

C.A. Margazano on Google wrote: “When we are in OBX this is my go to every morning! Their ingredients are fresh and the shop is SO clean! I love this place so much and it’s great for a break from the heavy/unhealthy vacation food.”

customer feedback island smoothieJill W. on Yelp wrote: “Do you want a refreshing, healthy way to start your day amongst a sea of beer and gluttonous beach food? Do you enjoy a colorful açaí bowl? Do you want a fresh, veggie wrap with homemade hummus?  If you answered yes to any of these, come to Island Smoothie.

We went twice during our recent beach trip and enjoyed the island powerup smoothie, blueberry orange mango, and a unique cinnamon, espresso, and banana smoothie, as well as above mentioned veggie wrap (my vegetarian friend was raving about it for days).

The owner grew up coming to Corolla and his family built their place in the 1970s.  He lives here full time and was SO genuine with recommendations and nice conversation. LOVE this place!”

These review make us so happy and we highly anticipate the day we can reopen and serve you!
