The whalehead club

Summer is nearing its end. Lots of fun was had by all. There is still plenty of time to soak up the rays and swim the ocean. Just be very careful of rip currents and strong tides.

There have been a lot of red flags at the beach, literally. These flags are posted when the current is strong and can be dangerous to young and inexperienced swimmers.

As a matter of fact, just today they raised a double red flag from Corolla and Duck to Buxton. From the Outer Banks Voice: “A RED FLAG DAY with HIGH rip current risk and dangerous shorebreak at all ocean beaches north of Cape Hatteras including Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Pea Island, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon and Buxton. Ocean conditions will lead to powerful rip currents and large breaking waves. Ocean swimming is not recommended, stay out of the water!”

“A YELLOW FLAG DAY with MODERATE rip current risk at the beaches south of Cape Hatteras including Frisco, Hatteras Village and Ocracoke. Only experienced surf swimmers who know how to escape a rip current should enter the water. Never swim alone and always take flotation!”
