However, visitors to this area may not be apprised to this information. In this article we plan to go over the best places to surf in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Kitty Hawk is one of the better places to serve in the OBX. There is a pier smack dab in the middle of Kitty Hawk. During swells, both sides of the pier make for great surf. Some folks even jump off the pier instead of battling the waves to get out. You can surf in the summer or you can serve in the winter with a wetsuit. It is a good idea to bring a surf buddy and let someone know you are surfing in case there is an emergency.

Duck Pier is another great place to ride some waves. It is known for its consistency and is very popular in the area. It can sometimes be overpopulated but if you walk down the beach a little you can usually find a good spot.

Corolla is a great place to surf in the summer. This is because the southeast swell occurs during this time of year. It’s a great Beach for beginners and families. If you are a more experienced surfer head over to Carova Beach. The waves are just a little bit bigger here.

History of Surfing in the Outer Banks

Surfing started in Hawaii and made its way to the west coast United States mainland in the 1950’s and 1960’s where it became immensely popular. Songs were written by groups like the Beach Boys and many other groups which were about the topic. Movies like Endless Summer helped inform the general public about the activity. 

It didn’t take long until the sport picked up steam on the eastern coast. Florida all the way up to New York saw kids rushing to buy longboards. Millions of people have surfed the coasts of the United States since the sports first gained popularity in the 50’s and 60’s.
