Blender - Smoothies

We serve delicious smoothies, fruit bowls and coffee all spring and summer and into the fall. Our customers know that we provide the very best quality ingredients available. Smoothies are our top item. So we figured we would use this blog to give a brief history about the smoothie itself.

According to most records, the term “smoothie” as a word has been around since the very early 20th century. But it wasn’t until the 1930’s that the term started being applied to a beverage.

The smoothie of the 1930’s looked a lot different from today’s smoothie. Back then it was simply fruit juice with ice. Sometimes the fruit juices were blended, but that was about the extent of their complexity.

The 1960’s and 1970’s came along and a large segment of the population got into “health food”. That was a newly coined term at the time. It basically meant any foods which were full of vitamins and minerals, and were low or absent of animal fat. Granola and other grains were publicized as the #1 health food.

The smoothie as we know it began to take off during this period. People stared mixing whole fruits and veggies along with ice in an electric blender.  Years would go by and people would mix more exotic fruits and would start to add various supplements.

Flash forward to today and you can basically get a fantastic smoothie with just about anything you want in it. Most people today use a smoothie as a snack while some use them as “meal replacements”.

Chances are there is a smoothie out there that you will like no matter how picky you are. If you are in the Outer Banks section of North Carolina, feel free to come by and see what we have to offer.
