fruit smoothies and how blending improves absorptionFeel like getting an energy boost that is healthy? Natural sugars located in fruits will give you an energy boost without the hangover of processed sugar.  A lot of people already grab a smoothie a few times per week for this very benefit. But did you know that the blending process actually helps the process?

Your body needs vitamins, minerals, and other goodies from food to fuel energy, boost immunity, and repair muscles. Nutrient absorption is how your digestive system breaks down food to send these benefits to your bloodstream. But here’s the catch: whole fruits and veggies have tough cell walls—made of cellulose—that can trap nutrients like vitamin A, C, or antioxidants. Chewing and digestion help, but they don’t always fully crack the code, especially with fibrous kale or thick-skinned berries.

Blending fruits and veggies smashes the cell walls and makes digestion and absorption easier and faster for your body. But there is a catch. This benefit is maximized for freshly blending fruit. When fruit has been blending a long time before being consumed, the contents lose some of their valuable potency. They can become oxidated and less nutritious.

What Can a Daily Smoothie Do for Me?

A 2015 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed blended fruit and veggie mixes raised nutrient levels in blood tests more than whole foods in some cases. Fast, tasty, and efficient smoothies are a health win!

Like I mentioned before, freshly blended is the key. Blending unlocks a nutrient goldmine, making smoothies a smart, delicious choice. What’s your favorite health goal—energy, immunity, or gut health? Tell us in the comments! Better yet, swing by Island Smoothie Cafe to taste the difference
