Spring is only a few months away and summer not far behind that. People love bathing in the ocean and bathing in the warm rays of the sun as well. A certain amount of sunlight is healthy for the human body. It stimulates the synthesis of Vitamin D. But too much sun can cause long term and even deadly effects.

There are two types of rays that affect the human skin: UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the ones responsible for aging and wrinkling of skin. It can cause a person to age prematurely. UVB, on the other hand, is the one more associated with sunburns. Studies have found that both do damage to the DNA on a cellular level and can cause skin cancer aka melanoma.

Wear sunscreen anytime you plan on spending more than 15 minutes in direct sunlight. Even if it cloudy, 80% of the rays can pass through the clouds. It is important to apply sunscreen when you are spending any amount of time at the beach in the summer. The sun or more directly focused on North America than at any other time of the year.

Don’t forget to spread the sunscreen on your ears, nose and forehead, and scalp if you are balding. Those areas are hit by more sun rays than any other part of the body, yet they are the most neglected when people apply sunscreen.

Sunscreen is available over-the-counter and can be found for well under ten bucks at most stores. There are many options from fragrance to strength of the protection with the latter being most important. Get at least an 30 SPF. If you are super fair-skinned you can get an 80 or 100 SPF. SPF stand for Sun Protection Factor.
